Got a Tivo? No? You should buy one - now. I picked up a Tivo Series 2 - 40 hour recently to replace my Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 (a really bad PVR but it was cheap, provided for free by my cable company) and after stringing 50 feet of telephone wire across my house for the initial Guided Setup I plugged in my shiny new LinkSys WUSB11 wireless USB adapter so that I didn’t have to use the telephone for updates and Tivo didn’t see it.

I was sure I was crazy or perhaps that the Tivolution was not meant to be… After all, only my great-grandmother would stand for having her Tivo dial-out every night using an antiquated telephone line. I, on the other hand, would stand for nothing less than broadband updates - and wireless at that. And yet, when I plugged the LinkSys WUSB11 into the rear of my Tivo, validated that I had a supported card (in fact, I purchased the Tivo recommended wireless adapter), and waited, nothing happened. Perhaps a reboot. Perhaps not! Still no response from my new, trusted friend. Hmph. The Tivo site clearly stated that after running through the Guided Setup using my telephone line, all 50 feet of it strung across my living room from the kitchen, I would be in broadband nirvana. But I was not.

As any good citizen would, I fired up Opera, loaded Google, and searched. Google was kind to me and provided the following link.

It seems that I needed to dial Tivo again and wait an hour while the latest version of the Tivo software was downloaded to my unit. 80 minutes later and I was setup for wireless updates.

Apparently Tivo support is in some cases a little confused as to exactly how to get the latest version of the software. Just force your box to dial again after completing the Guided Setup. Simple enough.
