CAPTAIN JACK CRAWFORD. Book signed: "Wishing you a Merry/Christmas and a/Happy New Year/I am/Yours Truly -/J.W. Crawford/'Capt Jack'" on the front flyleaf, 208p, 6x8¼, hardcover. His first book of poetry, The Poet Scout, H. Heller & Co., San Francisco: 1879. First Edition. Dated by him at upper margin: "December 1st- 1879". John W. Crawford (1847-1917), known as "Captain Jack, The Poet Scout", began writing verse and reciting his rhymes in the late 1870s and became a popular lecturer. His first volume of verse, The Poet Scout, was published in 1879. "Captain Jack" had a colorful career in the Old West, beginning when he is said to have been one of the first seven men to enter the Black Hills region after the ill-fated Custer expedition. There, he served as Chief of Scouts for the Black Hills Rangers. During the Sioux Wars of 1876, "Captain Jack" was a scout in New Mexico and also a special agent of the Indian Bureau near San Marcial on the Rio Grande River. Crawford, who also wrote three plays and over 100 short stories, had not learned to read and write until during the Civil War, when he wounded at Spotsylvania and sent to a hospital. Cover worn. Signature page lightly creased and soiled. Title page separated from binding. Dampstained at right margin of some pages. Overall, fine condition. FRED HAISE, JR. Matchbook signed: "Fred W. Haise", 4½x1½ when opened. Fred Wallace Haise, Jr. (born in 1933) was one of the 19 astronauts selected by NASA in 1966. Haise, who was a lunar module back up crew member for Apollo 8 and Apollo 11 and spacecraft commander backup for Apollo 16, was the Lunar Module Pilot on the aborted Apollo 13 mission in 1970. In 1977, he commanded the space shuttle Enterprise five times as part of the Approach and Landing Test Program at Edwards Air Force Base. After retiring from NASA in June 1979, Haise joined Northrop Grumman Technical Services (GTS), serving as Vice President (from 1979), President of GTS (from 1983) and President of the Space Station Program Support Division (from 1987).
