The letter discusses the weather, the health of family members, and a gift for her brother. Two years before she married France's King Louis XIV, the daughter of Spain's King Philip IV and Queen Mariana and future Queen of France writes to the Condesa de Salvatierra who had been her governess. By the Treaty of the Pyrenees which ended the war between Spain and France, signed a year before her marriage, Marie-Thérèse renounced her claim to the throne of Spain. During her marriage, she was neglected by King Louis XIV for his mistresses who greatly influenced his reign. Lightly creased. Browned at corners. Vertical fold touches flourish on "M" of "Maria". He became Prime Minister after the French defeat at Dienbienphu. At the 1954 Geneva Conference, he arranged the armistice that halted the fighting in Indochina. He also helped bring about the formation of the Western European Union and he proposed far-reaching economic reform. His cabinet fell in 1955 on the issue of his liberal North African policy. Marie-Edme-Patrice-Maurice de MacMahon led the assault on Malakoff in the Crimea (1855), led the successful campaign against the Kabyles in Algeria (1857-1858), turned defeat into victory at Magenta (1859) and helped the French win at Solferino in the war with Austria. In 1859, MacMahon was created Marshal and duc de Magenta. He later served as Governor General of Algeria (1864-1870) and President of France (1873-1879). Lightly soiled and creased.
