Evita Eva Peron Souvenir Theater Book 1981 ------------------------------------- We are selling a 9 1/4 inch by 11 3/4 wide, 24 page souvenir book for the musical Evita, the story of Eva Peron, wife of Juan Peron President of Argentina in the late 1940s-early 1950s. The souvenir theater book appears to be for a 1981 Broadway production of the show as it lists the 1978-1980 awards won by the show and stars Loni Ackerman, Anthony Crivello and David Cryer as Eva, Che Guevara and Juan (there is also a flyer with a photo and text on Scott Holmes as Che). Book has interesting black and white photos of the real Eva, Juan and Che, photos of the cast, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyricist Tim Rice, Director Harold Prince, etc. with short biographies and color and black and white scenes from the show. Book also has the words for all the songs and a chronology of events in Argentina during and after Perons time as president. Covers are foxed and soiled as is page 1, otherwise condition is good. This is a programme of the show "LES HEURES SONT BELLES" CAN- CAN DANCING AND SHOWS by TABARIN.... Book Description: Published in 1938 this show program is very rare !!!!!!!!!! The cover is a soft velvet like feel paper - embossed into the cover is the legs and frilled skirt of the typical Can-Can girl.. plus the words "TABARIN PARIS 1938" .. there is a small stain on front cocver (se scan) and edges are curled and creased - NO tears and book is tight... Inside are many adverts for both clothing and liquer plus MANY BLACK & WHITE - Some are hand corrected and touched up - of many stills of the show - many naked or partically naked women - plus many clothed in thier stage costumes.. THE HISTORY OF THE NAME TABARIN :::::::::: Tabarin was the street name assumed by the most famous of the Parisian street charlatans, Anthoine Girard (c. 1584 – August 16, 1633), who amused his audiences in the Place Dauphine by farcical dialogue with his brother Philippe (as Mondor), with whom he reaped a golden harvest by the sale of quack medicines for several years after 1618. Street theatre was popular theatre, on an improvised stage with a curtain backdrop, to the music of a hurdy-gurdy and a set of viols. More formal contemporary performances were confined to the royal court or to the Hotel de Bourgogne, overseen by the medieval guild that had the monopoly of theatrical performances in Paris. A contemporary woodcut shows Tabarin in the dress of a clown, but with a gallant moustache and pointed beard, carrying a wooden sword, like his distant puppet descendant Mr. Punch, — which would trip him up— and wearing a soft grey felt hat capable of assuming countless amusing shapes in his deft fingers. Tabarin from French tabard denotes a short cloak of the kind the commedia dell'arte figure Scaramouche wears. In more elaborate weekly performances others appeared, notably his wife. The following information is taken from Wikipedia: Robert Todd Duncan Robert Todd Duncan (1903-1998) was an American baritone. Duncan was born in Danville, Kentucky. He was George Gershwin's personal choice as the first performed of the role of Porgy in Porgy and Bess in 1935. Duncan played the role more than 1,800 times. He was also the first performer for the role of Stephen Kumalo in Kurt Weill's Lost in the Stars and was a noted concert singer. Duncan taught voice at Howard University in Washington, D.C. for more than fifty years. He obtained his musical training at Butler University in Indianapolis with a B.A. in music followed by an M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College. In 1933, Duncan debuted in Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana at the Mecca Temple in New York. In 1945, he became the first African American to sing with a major opera company singing the role of Tonio in Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci with the New York City Opera Company. In the same year he sang as Escamillio in Bizet's Carmen. While teaching at Howard, he continued touring as a solist with concert pianist William Allen. He retired and opened his own voice studio giving periodic recitals. In 1978, the Washington Performing Arts Society presented his seventy-fifth birthday gala.
