Harry Truman & Herbert Hoover signatures on photo The signatures of two American Presidents Harry Truman and Herbert Hoover both signed a photo showing them shaking hands in the oval office. The photo and the signature are in excellent condition. On April 12, 1945 Roosevelt died and Truman became the 33rd president. In 1945 he made the decision to drop two atomic bombs on Japan, finally ending the war. Truman steered the U.S. through the post-war period with colorful, no-nonsense harangues that have since grown legendary. He was re-elected in 1948 in a contest many expected him to lose to the Republican candidate, Thomas Dewey. (A famous photograph shows Truman holding up a premature edition of the Chicago Tribune with the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman.") Herbert Clark Hoover was a successful mining businessman before turning to political administration. A Republican, he defeated Democrat Alfred E. Smith in the presidential election of 1928. The stock market crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression overwhelmed his presidency. In spite of a wide variety of successful reforms, Hoover was held accountable for the dire economic situation and was badly defeated in his bid for a second term by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt. The photo was taken at the Truman Presidential Library in 1961 and signed at a later date. Both the signatures and image are in excellent condition. In the election of 1944 President Franklin Roosevelt chose Senator Harry S. Truman to be his vice presidential candidate. On April 12, 1945 Roosevelt died and Truman became the 33rd president. Growing discontent with the U.S. involvement in Korea led Truman to give up politics at the end of his second term. He was succeeded as president by Dwight D. Eisenhower Eisenhower was the most famous U.S. Army general of World War II. A career Army man, he rose to the level of 5-star general and oversaw the Allied forces in Europe, including the famous D-Day invasion of France in 1944. After the war he served briefly as president of Columbia University, then was chosen over Robert A. Taft as the Republican candidate for U.S. president in 1952. He won handily in 1952 and again in 1956, defeating Democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson both times. Ike survived a half-dozen heart attacks over 15 years before succumbing in 1969.
