See new review posted at TOPKAYAKER.NET, Sea Kayaker Magazine and wetdawg.com. Sit on Top, or SOT kayaks, typically have no place to mount a sail in the cockpit. The best mount location is often fore of the foot wells or near the front hatch. A free stand sail mounted thus is difficult to reach to set up or take down while on the water. With the Primex Sail, the sail is right at hand in the lap for easy handling; no precarious moving around onboard required. Weighs in at about 2lbs and breaks down small for traveling. Compare with EZ V Sails (plastic one piece masts and free standing) and Spirit Sail (good masts, but free standing also and double the money). Primex sail components are well made and durable: high grade accessory cord leads, masts built by Glasform here in the states, and 70 denier, ripstop nylon sail. As an ocean kayak enthusiast, I have used this sail rig on all of my SOT kayak expeditions along the BC and Southeast Alaskan coast (see: wetdawg.com: 'Chaos on the Open Ocean', or last June's issue of C&K). I believe in a spinnaker sail as a valuable adjunct to paddling while kayak touring, and the Primex sail is the best I've found to date. The sail set up in seconds, spills air instantly and takes down quickly when the wind leaves you flat. No drilling or hard mounting is necessary and the universal deck mount clip is adjustable for different lengths and clips securely onto eyelets on your boat. I have yet to find a boat I couldn't easily rig this thing up to. I use open kayaks exclusively and mount it well forward of the foot wells. That way the sail rides neatly beside you or just overhead when not in use, and is right at hand when you are ready to deploy it. One of the primary concerns about kayak sailing is control of your sail. I want control right in my hands to spill air instantly and to maximize power in a given direction. With the Primex, it's kind of like board sailing, and keeps me actively, but differently, engaged with the process of traveling in a small boat.
