GMail now Google Mail in U.K.

akaDruid dropped me a note on the 19th letting me know of Google's new service name in the U.K. Of course, being the slacker I am just now posting this news. Had I posted the info when I received it I would have easily been one of the first to carry the news. Now, I am firmly last. This is truly a sad, sad day. In any case, thanks akaDruid and thanks Pete. Pete followed akaDruid by two days with the news. The Druid speaks on the Gmail name change here. In related Gmail news, the new Autosave feature rocks. Simply awesome....

New GMail Features

Google released several new features today- Autosave - this is easily the strongest new feature. Contacts Export - You can now export your contacts into an Outlook or GMail compatible CSV file for import into Outlook or ... GMail. Google Toolbar - now has a GMail button. (not so new) Personalized Google.com - allows reading of your GMail. (not so new) Google Desktop Search - the new version of GDS caches your GMail messages for online or offline searches. Well, as I stated I feel autosave is the strongest new feature. Beyond that and the contacts export these *new features* are mostly concerned with expanding the feature sets of other Google applications or more strongly tying the disparate Google product...

Aimless Bob Sleeps and Misses the Closing of the GMail Invite Spooler

Is Google evil? I have gotten the word from Gmail's Product Manager that my service is no longer tolerable. At midnight PDT June 7th, 2005, this service was disabled. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all who contributed to this service. Your generosity helped out a vast number of people and for that you should be proud. The gmail spooler email account is now deactivated and any mail sent to it will bounce. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to drop me a line: email@isnoop.net via [isnoop.net] I have been out of pocket for several months (summer vacation) and I have not been giving the site the focus I have in the past....

If you are running Mac OS 10.4 here is an unread mail counter for your dashboard. I find I am using the dashboard and associated widgets a little more each day. In fact, dashboard exposed me to the very useful features of Expose. Try it you will be amazed at the things you can do. "A simple widget that reports the number of unread messages in your GMail account without any fancy graphics or using much Dashboard space. Just enter your username and password on the back and you are good to go." (Via DashboardWidgets.)...

GMail Now Google Mail

in Germany... Sorry about the sensational headline: Google’s introduction of the email service ‘Gmail’ already had a bad start. First the search machine hit the headlines in America for failing to register the trademark in time, and then followed a trademark dispute in Germany. As the name ‘Gmail’ is already registered in Germany in class 38 for electronic services, Google has now renamed its service. In Germany from now on the service will run under the name ‘Google Mail’. (Via Markenbusiness.)...

GMail Allows Display of Remote Graphics Per Email Origin

I have been busy lately and didn't get to post this when I first noticed it but GMail now offers a link at the top of each message that contains remotely referenced images allowing the images to be permanently allowed to load on a per email address basis. This is one of those DOH! features that I have sorely missed from my earlier, pre-GMail days. Now I can see those Amazon images without explicitly clicking the GMail link to allow them to be loaded....

I don't know about everyone else but I want my links. I have yet to receive the clips upgrade: Well, its been 19 days since Google started rolling out Web Clips to some Gmail users, and many (myself included) are still waiting. Danny Sullivan just got it, and he's got more information and screenshots. He reports that Web Clips comes with three feeds already subscribed to... (Via InsideGoogle.)...

Gmail S/MIME for Firefox

Pretty cool: Gmail S/MIME provides Firefox users with S/MIME support for Gmail. S/MIME support is integrated directly into Google's Gmail web interface. Reading and sending of encrypted mail is supported. Verification of signatures is not currently supported. There are some interoperability and performance issues which I plan to iron out in later releases. (Via Richard.Jones.name.)...

GMail Getting an RSS Reader

Interesting but I question the usability. I read over one hundred feeds every day and to be effective I use a high-quality RSS reader (NetNewsWire). I just can't see this as being a very effective way for any but the most casual RSS reader to view RSS feeds. In any case, great catch Evan (screen capture available, follow the link): Since I haven't seen anyone posting about this, I suppose I will. I'm guessing not many people have it yet, but there's a new feature in Gmail called Web Clips, which displays little headlines above your inbox or message and is fed via, um, feeds.
Google to Expand GMail to 2GB and Beyond!

Update: My account now has 1393MB total storage. These guys are serious. My GMail account now shows 1072MB instead of 1000MB. Looks like Yahoo and company have some disk arrays to install this weekend... :) : Lots of us were wondering if Gmail would leave beta today, it's first anniversary. The answer, according to this News.com article, is no. Gmail remains in beta. However, the same story reports that Google is doubling the amount of storage space it offers from 1GB to 2GB today and then will add a "yet-to-be-determined amount of extra storage daily with no plans to stop." It looks as if the day of the unlimited inbox is here.
